Mercenary Tips:
Use the curse amplify damage to double his effectiveness. Damage reduction, leech gear, and the wickedest weapon you can find will keep your merc alive.

A specialist in poisoning, hexing, and summoning, the necromancer is a powerful force on the b.net, combining ease of play with potent abilities. The necromancer is often nicknamed "The zoo-keeper" by on-line players - due to his tendency to collect massive, lag causing armies of minions that clog screens, grind frame rates to single digits, and utterly pulverize any monster that dares challenge you.

One important facet of the necromancer to consider - his class is the most dependent on "cross" applications of a broad range of his abilities. While most other classes can "one-trick-poney" one 30th level ability, a necro MUST combine his bone, summons, and curses effectively to stand a chance. But, when he does this effectively, he is well-nigh invulnerable. (Only network lag kills a high level necromancer).

A necromancer's priorities are getting gear that adds bonuses to skills, and equipment that yields a high level of magic resistance. No class benefits as much from a +1 to all as much as a necromancer. He must spread his points about, so a +1 bonus could be as many as fifteen free skill points. Additionally, with each bonus, the number of minions a "necro" can summon increases. +1 means 3 extra minions to a high level character, and that is plenty of extra destruction. The resistance is a matter of common sense. With your minion army intercepting all the melee grunts, the only attacks leveled directly at a necromancer will be magical ones, so a high degree of resistance will greatly magnify his life span. Smoke is a great choice for the poor player, and the unique armors Skin of the Viper Magi or Silks of the Victor are very popular as well. A truly rich player might consider the unique armor Arkain's Valor.

A necromancer's strength lies in his ability to deal with huge pack of Diablo 2. Without question, the necromancer is the best equipped to handle massive groups of highly damaging monsters, such as the Cows found in the Moo Moo Farm, or the frenzy enhanced Blood Lords Guarding Baal's lair. And as far as safety, a minion surrounded necromancer is almost immune to the continual lag spikes that plague the battle.net.

But even the necromancer has a weakness - bosses. There is no "easy" method for a necromancer to dispatch a super unique boss, especially on the hell difficulty. He is forced to transform his golem into a sacrificial lamb, while he casts iron maiden and slowly allows the boss to destroy itself. Nothing is as slow and arduous as boss killing with a necromancer, even bone spirit is pathetically underpowered in 8 player games.
